Unreported World - South Sudan, How to fuel a famine.

The following are notes I made during the documentary:

1. East Africa is in the grip of the worst humanitarian crisis in over a decade.
2. Drought has led to cronic hunger-> in South Sundan, the desperation for food is fueling ethnic conflict.
3. The country that has just emerged from one war, now is sliding back into the bloodshed.
4. Jonglei is South Sudan's most volatile area.

5. South Sudan is "officially" at peace.
6. Tribes in South Sudan have always fought over land and cattle. And failed rain has made it worse. 2000 people have died in one year.
7. There's only one hospital in the town of Akovo and it serves over 50,000 people.
8. 1.5 million people there don't have enough food - in the market, all you can find is some cereals, onions and wild grass.
9. The government in South Sudan has made billions in recent years from oil revenue. But 40% of its budget is spent on the military.
10. The reporter is in the UN speed boat heading North(upper Nile state) over the SOBAT river. Suddenly she's told to duck down, and is told to secretly film using the small camera. She's with the UN security guard and she's told that there are lots of youths(about 15 of them)holding guns(AK47). They told the reporter that they are preparing for an attack on a rival tribe.

11. She interviews the white army commander. (White army recently attacked the UN barges over the Sobat river). White army commander was suspicious of three commercial boats following the convoy. He believes that the guns were brought from Khartum and given to a rival tribe. Northern Sudan is arming groups in the south as a tactic in order for people to kill each other.
12. The number of child abduction is increasing.
Why child abduction?
To that answers the director of the child welfare,
"They abduct children and sell them among themselves"
How much are children worth?
"25 or 30 cattle."
13. As the South moves towards independence, different ethnic groups across the country are vying for control. With the Northern government often accused of pulling the strings.

One of the MANY bulletholes in a hut that's just been raided in South Sudan.
